Yolanda S. Vega Hidalgo born July 21, 1930 in Brownsville, Texas was called home to be with the Lord on May 19, 2015 at the age of 84. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jorge Sumaya Longoria and Irene Valent Sumaya and her nephew Ciro Valent Sumaya II. She is survived by her children, Irene Sanchez Ross (Troy) and Luis Rene (Louie) Hidalgo, her grandsons Tobin Gregory Ross and Benjamin Zachary Ross, her two brothers, George Valent Sumaya (Mary Ellen) and Dr. Ciro Valent Sumaya (Carmen), nephew Jaime Andres Sumaya and grandnephew Diego Andres Sumaya.
Yolanda is a descendant of early pioneer families that came to South Texas from Spain and Germany. She graduated from Brownsville High School with a 4 year scholarship in music to Baylor University due to her achievements in playing her clarinet. She was an avid bowler, loved to watch "Star Trek" movies and enjoyed playing slot machines with great success. Her 50+ auto title career extended from South Texas to San
Antonio, Texas. She will be remembered for her loyalty to her friends and "giving spirit" with always putting others’ needs before hers.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff and caregivers at VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit, Methodist Hospital (ICU/IMIS) and Golden Estates Nursing Home.
A visitation will be held at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers on Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A graveside services and interment will be at Buena Vista Cemetery in Brownsville, Texas on May 26, 2015at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Ciro Valent Sumaya II Memorial Scholarship at The University of Texas at Brownsville, One West University Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78520.
