Bill was a gentleman who charmed everyone with his kindness and dignity. Through many years of dementia/Alzheimer's, we learned to let go as this wonderful man who touched so many lives was erased story by story, memory by memory, as everything familiar faded into the unknown.
William "Bill" Booth Amick, Sr., 78, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2012 at Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veteran's Home in Floresville, Texas. He was born in Prosperity, South Carolina on February 27, 1934 in his Grandmother's home to William Omerle "Buster" and Mary Sue Booth Amick.
He grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and graduated from Dreher High School, Class of 1953.
He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. While stationed at Fort McCoy Wisconsin he met and married the love of his life, Lois Sommerfield.
He worked and retired from the Mennen Company of Morristown, New Jersey (Mennen/Colgate) as National Sales Manager of Special Markets.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Great Granddaughter, Adalee Jewel Martinez; sister-in law Mavis S. Sommerfield; brother-in-law Harold Hutchison, Jr.; and brother-in-law Arlan L. Bowen.
He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Lois Sommerfield Amick of San Antonio, Texas. Daughter, Lynda Diane Johnson and husband Eric of San Antonio, Texas. Sons, William "Bill" B. Amick, Jr. and wife Leslie of Marietta, Georgia, and Douglas D. Amick and wife Kelli of Austin, Texas. Six grandchildren, Stephen A. Elolf of San Antonio, Texas; Amber E. Amick of Marietta, Georgia, Joseph A. Elolf of Schertz, Texas; Lara A. Elolf and husband Charles Allbritton of Selma, Texas; Katherine "Kate" Thiel and husband Nate of Marietta, Georgia and Casey Amick of Austin, Texas. Great Granddaughters, Kyla A. Martinez and Avalyn A. Allbritton of Selma, Texas and Emerson I. Amick-Dalba of Marietta, Georgia. Sisters, Mary E. Sikes and husband Robert of Bluffton, South Carolina, Marie Hutchison of Irmo, South Carolina. Brother, Larry D. Amick and wife Cynthia of Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Sister-in-law, Shirley A. Bowen of Largo, Florida; brother-in-law, Arthur D. Sommerfield of Bangor, Wisconsin. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
The family appreciates the beauty and sentiment expressed in flowers but would prefer contributions to Grace Lutheran Church, Prosperity, South Carolina, Abiding Presence Lutheran Church of San Antonio, The Alzheimer's Foundation, Odyssey Hospice or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank all of Bill's friends and caretakers at The Haven - Stone Oak in San Antonio and Dr. Jibrail Kasperkhan and his nurses for five wonderful years of caring; the Frank M. Tejeda Veterans Home in Floresville, Texas and Texas Odyssey Hospice for their compassion, skill and understanding during Bill's final days.
