Warren Paul Murrell, Jr. passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025, at the age of 80 in San Antonio, Texas. He was surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren and leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.
Born on July 8, 1944, in Morgan City, Louisiana, Paul lived a full and vibrant life. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where he played baseball for the USL Bulldogs. He graduated in the spring of 1966 and married Nell Birch later that summer on June 11. Paul joined the U.S. Air Force in January 1967, serving as a Medical Service Corps officer until his retirement in May 1988. While serving in the Air Force, he earned a master’s degree in public administration from Auburn University. He subsequently worked in various healthcare-related jobs and retired from his position as the Administrator for UT Health San Antonio’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in 2015.
Paul was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Due to Paul's career in the Air Force, he and Nell raised their family across the United States, making eight different states their home over the years. He took his family to see historical monuments and roadside attractions along the way, learning as much as he could about each new place they visited and passed through. After retiring from the Air Force, he and Nell planted roots in San Antonio but traveled home to Louisiana as often as they could to visit family and friends.
When his first grandchild was born in October 1992, he chose the nickname "Bull" for himself, and it stuck. He cherished spending time with his family, and his wisdom, sense of humor, and unwavering support will be deeply missed.
Paul is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nell Birch Murrell; his children, Warren Paul Murrell III (Rachel Hery), Kimberly Roy (Douglas), and Jennifer Murrell (Jason Wahl); his grandchildren, Savannah Saltaformaggio (Michael), Jackson Murrell (Hadley), Elizabeth Roy, Brooks Murrell (Grace Lagalante), David Roy, and great-grandson, Brady Saltaformaggio. He is also survived by many loving family members and friends. Preceding him in death are his parents, Warren Paul Murrell, Sr., and Geraldine Lambert Murrell, and his sisters Kathryn Ann and Linda Margaret Murrell.
A Funeral Service will be held on February 24 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. Visitation begins at 9:30 am, followed by a Rosary and Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 am, with a Graveside service at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arc of San Antonio, an organization that benefitted his sister Linda. https://arc-sa.org/donate/
