Vicente (Papi) Castaneda was born December 5th, 1948 to Manuel and Evangelina Castaneda in Eagle Pass, Texas. He was one of 8 siblings growing up in Eagle Pass, Tx. Growing up he had a great passion for baseball, playing for the Eagle Hardware Harvesters where he was known as “Lefty”.
Vicente was enlisted into the United States Army in 1972. This would be the same year he married his loving wife, Rosa Castaneda. In 1990 Vicente was deployed to Saudi Arabia to support in the Gulf War under “Operation Desert Shield” and “Operation Desert Storm”. Vicente served as Truckmaster in the 27th MSB 1st Cavalry Division. In the military, Vicente got to travel the world with his children Alberto, Jesus, and Rosa living in Germany, South Carolina, Kansas, and later arrived back in Texas where he retired in Fort Hood in 1992 serving a total of 20 proud years in the United States Army.
In 1993, Vicente laid out permanent roots in San Antonio, Tx where he would spend the rest of his life watching his children grow and later being blessed with 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Vicente always made a lasting impression in the lives of all those he met. He was an exemplary son, father, brother, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend that everyone loved dearly. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
Vicente was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Evangelina Castaneda and his brother Roberto Rodriquez. He is survived by his siblings: Jesus Hernandez, Jorge Escobar, Manuel Castaneda Jr., Clara Castaneda, Maria Tovar, and Evangelina Hernandez. He also leaves behind many loving grandchildren, nephews, nieces and loving relatives in Texas, Wisconsin, Alabama, Michigan, Minnesota, California and Mexico.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.
Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Monday, March 29, 2021.
