Verdell Graduated from MacArthur High School in San Antonio, Texas in 1977. She went on to further her education at the University of Incarnate Word where she received her Bachelor's degree in Education. She was a Special Education teacher in several school districts, and was loved by students and teachers alike. She finally retired after 33 years from NEISD.
She gave birth to her daughter Monique Jovanna Hardy August 21, 1985 and later also became mom to Yahani Robinson after marrying the love of her life, Nathaniel Griffin over 20 years ago. She called him her best caregiver and rock. She was always so proud of both daughters and loved being a grandma.
Verdell was a longstanding member of New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church where she loved to cook and sing in the choir. She loved binge watching cooking competitions and never missed any football games, especially her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.
Her battle with MDS began over 20 years ago. She was a ferocious fighter and would spend her days encouraging others rather than complaining about herself. Verdell finally succumbed to the many complications of her illness on October 19, 2022.
Verdell leaves behind a loving husband Nathaniel Griffin Jr., two daughters Monique Hardy and Yahani Robinson (Nicolas Sr.) one brother Artis Barnes Jr. (Patricia), four grandchildren, one nephew Jason Barnes (Melissa) and a host of extended family and friends.
A visitation for Verdell will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM.
