Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Tom Jordan Meyer, age 54, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2020. Tom was born on June 14, 1965 in Marshfield, Wisconsin, the youngest son of Donald and Anna May (Rudi) Meyer. Although he grew up in rural Wisconsin, Tom always said he got to Texas as fast as he could, graduating from high school in Gainesville, Texas. He returned to Wisconsin with his parents and enlisted in the United States Army, completing Basic Training and finishing first in his class in AIT. He then served in the US Army Reserves and worked alongside his father in a shoe factory.
Tom soon found himself missing Texas, which led him to enroll at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. He met his wife, Susan (Duckworth) at HSU, and they married in 1987. He formed many lifelong friendships at HSU. Tom completed ROTC studies, was commissioned as an Army Second Lieutenant in May 1985, and graduated with a BA in Political Science in 1988. He and Susan, with their three children – Thomas, Julia, and James – were stationed across the world as Tom served, first as an Air Defense Artillery Officer and later as a Military Intelligence Officer. He received a Bronze Star for his service in Desert Storm and a Legion of Merit upon retirement from active duty in 2010, in addition to many other medals and awards. Tom also earned an MA in Strategic Intelligence from American Military University.
Tom was fascinated by the wonder of nature. He loved to grow trees from acorns or seeds, and many friends in San Antonio have trees that Tom started. He planted trees at each of the family's homes and enjoyed driving past them after moving on to check on their progress. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed upland game hunting, but when it wasn't hunting season, he could be found manicuring the landscape at home. Tom was an active member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in San Antonio, where he served on the Board of Trustees. He had served on the Hardin-Simmons University Alumni Association Board and proudly manned HSU's table at college fairs.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Anna May Meyer, and brother, David Wayne Meyer. He is survived by his wife, Susan; son, Thomas; daughter, Julia; son, James; and grandson, Clark Perkins. He is also survived by his father, Don Meyer; brother, Bill (Barbara) Meyer; brother, Todd (Sheryl) Meyer; sister, Nancy Meyer; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at Porter Loring North.
