Our mother Sylvia Y. Garcia went home to our Lord on August 8th, 2021. Sylvia was born on October 25, 1949 in San Antonio, TX and lived just South of downtown most of her life. Early on, she attended St. Philip of Jesus School, Briscoe Elementary, and Harris Middle School. In May 1968, Sylvia graduated from Burbank High School and soon after worked briefly at Kress Department Store in downtown San Antonio. In 1969 she began her 31 year career at Kelly Air Force Base where she had many friends and met the love of her life, husband Manuel Garcia Sr. About 1973, Mom made the newspaper as the “First Lady” to work as a sheet metal mechanic’s helper at the Base Civil Engineering Metal Shop at Kelly AFB.
Sylvia was a daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and a friend to many in her 71 years of life. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family, especially with her five sons of whom she was extremely proud of. Mom would never admit it but she also loved “chismeando” with her youngest sister Lupe on the phone often. She was also hard working, doing what was needed to provide for her family and had a great sense of humor.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her father Jose Maria Ybanez, mother Josephine Ybanez, her husband, Manuel Garcia Sr., her youngest sister Guadalupe “Lupe” Ybanez, Aunt Mary Clark, and sister in law Diana Ybanez.
She is survived by her five sons Jose A Ybanez, daughter in law Emma E Ybanez, Erik L Garcia, daughter in law Tami Tyler, Michael A Garcia, daughter in Law Veronica Garcia, Peter M Garcia, and Paul M Garcia, daughter in law Leslie Robin Van Meter, She is also survived by sister Gloria Alexander, brother in law Ralph Alexander, sister Ruth Gomez, brother in law Charles Gomez, brother Robert Palacios, sister in law Maria Palacios, and brother Julio Ybanez. Grandma Cha Cha has many loving grandchildren Jaqlyn J Ybanez, Jazmin R. Ybanez, Jewel D Ybanez, Erik D Garcia, Aileene Rodriguez, Michael A Garcia, Alyssa Garcia, Amaris Garcia, and Rowan Garcia. Grandma Cha Cha also has great grandchildren, Aniyah Ybanez, Calliope Molina, Olivia Coy-Ybanez and Aria Garcia. Sylvia had numerous nieces and nephews.
On September 1st, 2021, a viewing, Rosary, and reception will take place at Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home at 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX 78218.
