It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Colonel Dr. Stephen Lawrence Welsh, Jr., a beloved father, father-in-law, friend, and cherished family member. Dr. Welsh, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, transitioned peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy; his two sons, Stephen III & John Alexander along with his daughter-in-laws Veronica & Lisa; his grandsons Stephen IV & John Paul along with great grand children; and beloved cousins, Magnes & Pat Welsh including many close friends, family, and his pup companion, Moon.
Born as an only child in Memphis, Tennessee, Stephen grew up with a love for family, faith, and service to others. He was a proud graduate of Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, and later attended Tulane University. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Memphis before fulfilling his dream of becoming a dentist. Dr. Welsh specialized in dental prosthodontics and had a distinguished career, proudly serving in the U.S. Army for many years. His service in the Vietnam War was marked by meritorious service and dedication, and he was honored with the Bronze Star Medal.
As a professional, Dr. Welsh was known for his expertise and commitment to improving the lives of his patients and providing an outstanding patient experience. Outside of his work, he was a devoted philanthropist, giving selflessly to those in need. His generosity was matched only by his unwavering faith as a devout Catholic, with God and family at the center of his life.
He retired from military service in 1993 moving his wife and youngest son to San Antonio continuing to enjoy retired life traveling, playing golf, and becoming Elaine’s pool boy with a stellar LinkedIn profile!
A true lover of life, Colonel Welsh enjoyed many passions, but one of his greatest joys was playing golf with his best buddy, Dr. Bill Fowler, and his son John. He treasured these moments of camaraderie and relaxation. He was proud of his son Stephen III for his military service and graduation from culinary school and of his son John’s professional achievements. He expressed deep gratitude for the loving care of his late daughter, Suzanne and the thoughtfulness and generosity of his daughter, Cindy.
Later in life, he stayed active and independent with a strict routine of early morning exercise, mass, yard work, pool service, house chores, and caring for his wife of 62 years until her transition in 2021. In his spare time, he enjoyed visiting with friends & family telling stories of all his adventures to all who would listen. His stories always reflected of his gratitude to Jesus for His grace, mercy, favor, and miracles throughout his life. Toward the end of his life, he would often end his stories with, “Thank you Jesus”.
Dr. Welsh loved his family deeply, and his presence will be profoundly missed. He was a man of discipline, integrity, strength, and compassion—qualities that were evident in everything he did, from his military service to his contributions to his community. His love for God, family, and country defined him, and his legacy will live on through the many people whose lives he impacted.
A memorial service to honor Dr. Welsh’s life and service will be held in early April. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity that supports veterans, pet rescue, or to the Catholic Church, causes that were close to his heart.
The Welsh Family would like to thank their family doctor Dr. Kevin Horton, MD and family companion & friend Maria Castillo including all the caregivers, service providers, physicians, specialists, and therapists for over 30 years of loving care & service while in San Antonio, TX.
Colonel Dr. Stephen Lawrence Welsh, Jr. is now at peace dancing with his beloved Elaine and laughing with his daughter Suzanne his mother Olive and his father Big Steve, but his memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace. We love you forever, Dad. Thank you, Jesus!
