Stella Cecilia Orona was born on September 16, 1946 to Ismael and Elodia (Gregory) Sanchez of San Antonio, Texas. A Class of 1964 Fox Tech graduate, Stella began her career as a licensed vocational nurse working in the neonatal intensive care unit at Baptist Hospital in downtown San Antonio then later at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston. Stella proudly maintained her LVN certification for over 55 years. She was an avid volunteer at local hospitals, Christian Assistance Ministry, and Primera Iglesia Bautista Mexicana.
Stella was a devoted wife, mom, grandma, sister, and friend. She had an uncanny ability to connect with everyone she met, often striking conversation with strangers, quickly endearing herself through her joyful smile and genuine caring nature. She delighted in celebrating holidays and special occasions, displaying her talent for handcrafted decorations. Stella loved a good deal and was known to frequent neighborhood garage sales, a pastime she shared with her daughter Monica. She enjoyed cheering on her hometown Spurs and celebrating Fiesta.
Stella passed away on February 20, 2023 at the age of 76. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Teodoro Orona. Stella’s pride was their son, Ted Orona; daughter, Monica (Leonardo) Villalobos; and two grandchildren, Gabriella and Lucas. Stella is also survived by her older sister, Emma Gregory; cousin, Richard Salinas; mutt, Guido, and grandmutts Layla, Buddy Lee and Kingston.
