Stanley “Totsy” Brehm, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on January 5, 2019 at the age of 88. Totsy was born and raised in San Antonio and graduated in the class of 1948 from Brackenridge High School. He proudly served in the Air National Guard during the Korean War. Upon returning, his 40 year career with Southwestern Bell and AT&T began. His love of nature was never more evident than during the time he spent at the Cibolo Hunting Club or over the last 20 years in their beloved hill country home in Bulverde. Never one to sit still, there was always a cedar bush to trim, some gravel to spread on the road, or something to tinker with in his workshop. Totsy was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he married Marilyn in 1952. He was an active member at the church where he served as an usher for many years, as well as a volunteer for other church functions. They continued to make the commute to St. John’s on Sunday mornings for as long as they were able to.
Totsy leaves behind his wife Marilyn of 66 years to cherish his memories along with daughters Donna Gates and Rhonda St. Martin and husband Ed; grandchildren Lindsay and husband Eric, Barrett and wife Jamie and 5 great grandchildren Ella, Lily, Allan, Avery, and Eric who shares his St. Patrick’s Day birthdate with his great grandfather. In addition to family he leaves behind a host of lifelong friends that will cherish the memories of traveling, hunting, and having a “cold one” at The Hill.
Totsy was afflicted with Alzheimer’s. Marilyn’s devotion to caring for him and spending every moment she could with him during the last chapter in their lives together came to be an inspiration to the institution of marriage itself, as well as to their friends and families.
A Celebration of Totsy’s life will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 502 E Nueva, San Antonio 78205 on Saturday, February 16th at “high noon.” Totsy loved barbequing so a reception with a barbeque lunch following the service seems only fitting.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Alzheimer’s Disease research, San Antonio Chapter:
