(Retired) CMSGT Sidney Herwig went to his home in heaven Nov 20, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha, parents Jim and Myrtle Herwig and two brother’s Jim and Vernon Herwig. Sidney was born in Woodward, Tx. May 21, 1922.
He is survived by his children Audrey Closson (husband Roy), Linda Gottfried (husband Alan) and Sidney Herwig (wife Linda), his grandchildren Brett Naquin, Rhianna Rinner, Sarah Rinner, Alana Gottfried, and James Closson, great grandchildren Sydney Naquin and Jana Lister.
Sidney served his country first in the Army Air Corps, then joined the U.S Airforce where he served 31 years he retired in 1973. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. After he retired he raised cattle in Divot, Texas and Poteet, Texas. He was an avid sportsman, his family has many cherished memories spending time on his boat fishing and on hunting trips. Sidney was a man of honor teaching his children responsibility and compassion. Sidney married Bertha in 1949 and was a devoted husband and father providing for his family. He and his wife Bertha were married for 63 years. Growing up in the Great Depression he acquired many talents from building a 16ft fiberglass boat to building a family room to his home and could re upholster furniture. He exemplified “The World’s Greatest Generation” Sidney lived a very full and meaningful life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will take place at Sunset Funeral Home Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 10:00am to 12:00pm with funeral services to begin at 12:00pm a committal service will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
