Ruth Dyer Hammond passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013. She was born November 30, 1918 to Edith and Arthur Dyer in Dallas, TX. She graduated from Highland Park High School and spent one year at SMU. She made San Antonio home when she married William H. (Bill) Hammond in 1938, a union that lasted until his death in 1999. She devoted her life to family and friends, her church, travel and volunteer work. Her life of volunteering began as a Gray Lady during World War II visiting wounded and burned soldiers at Fort Sam Houston and continued with the DAR, Perennial Garden Club, Junior League, Battle of Flowers, Christmas Clearance Bureau, YWCA, and Humane Society. She was a 75 year member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and worked in many areas of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. She learned to sew at an early age and was a beautiful seamstress, as well as, gardener, cook and bridge player. Her cooking talents made her a wonderful hostess and led her to help open the Tea Room at Scrivener’s, Inc. and to many happy years cooking and serving with the “Lunch Bunch” at Alamo Heights Methodist Church. Ruth was a real sports fan. She loved the Dallas Cowboys and watching tennis and golf tournaments.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister and brother-in-law and daughter-in-law Mary Ann Hammond. She is survived by her son, William H. (Pete) Hammond, Jr.; daughter, Ruth Swain and son-in-law George Swain; four loving grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and the last of many beloved pets, her cat, Smokey.
The family would like to thank Dolores Longoria, the staff at the skilled nursing care unit at the Forum and VITAS Hospice Care for their loving care.
