Rufus Moore, son of Rev. Glenn Lester Moore and Mary Eliza Sloan Moore was born in Iredell County, Troutman, North Carolina on April 18, 1931. He was educated in the Iredell County School System and was a 1949 graduate of Unity High School. After joining the United States Air Force in 1951 as a Telecommunications Cryptography Equipment Systems Mechanic he served tours in Korea, during the Korean war, Duncanville AB, Texas, RAF South Ruislip, England, Duluth AB Minnesota, Luke AFB, Arizona, Iraklion AB, Crete, Clark AFB, Philippines, Kelly AFB Texas, and Karamursel AB, Turkey. His last duty station before retirement was Kelly AFB, Texas. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force in 1977. Upon retirement he taught elementary education as both a teacher and counselor in the Northside School district in San Antonio for the next 20 years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and his Master of Education Degree from Southwest Texas State University. He was a faithful member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church for over 40 years where he served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister.
He was proceeded in death his two brothers, Manuel B. Moore and Calvin Pressley Moore and three sisters, Daisy Bell Johnson, Mary Elizabeth Lawrence and Stepsister Dianne Wilson and granddaughter Christina James. Rufus Moore had over 50 first cousins since his father came from a family of nine.
He married the love of his life, Charlie-Jean Cherry on October 2, 1954 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas. Of that union they had five children.
Left to cherish his memories and celebrate his legacy: his loving wife of 66 years, Charlie Jean, and his sister, Marie Cowan of Troutman, North Carolina, step-brother, Michael Moore of Ft. Washington, Maryland, Sharon Campbell (Donnie) of Indian Trails, North Carolina, Colette Moore of Indian Trials, North Carolina and Yvonne Umphrey of Raleigh North Carolina; five children, Stephen (Angela) Moore of Sugarland, Houston, Ursula (Cedric) Jordan of Lancaster, Dallas, Teresa (Robert) Dennis of Commerce Texas, Gregory (Heidi) Moore of Damascus, Maryland, and Ann Marie Moore of San Antonio, Texas; Eight grandchildren: Sean Moore, Shanice Jordan, Amber (Timothy) Moore, Christopher Jordan, Anthony Moore, Alex Moore, Sarah Dennis, Josiah Dennis and Paul Moore.
