Roy Edward Farley was born April 14th, 1932 in Buckhannon, West Virginia to Pearl J. Pratt, Farley and Wetzel Farley. Roy grew up during the Great Depression in Upshur County VW.
Roy married Diane Ruth Heide on July 31st 1960 and remained together until her death September 21st 2019.
Roy enlisted in the United States Army April 11th, 1950, 3 days shy of his 18th Birthday. Later that year Roy would serve with Bravo Co of the 31st infantry Regiment. In October of 1950 Roy would receive orders that would forever change his life. Roy would deploy to Korea and Serve during the Korean War. In late November 1950 Roy would be captured by the Chinese Army at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He would be held prisoner until August of 1953. He credited his West Virginia upbringing for helping him survive. For many years his fellow prisoners would credit him with helping them survive. In May 1958 he would reenlist into the Army and serve until his retirement on June 30th 1978. During those years he would meet and wed his wife Diane Ruth Heide. They would serve all over the world together. Denmark, Yugoslavia, Okinawa and many points across the United States. Following his retirement from the Army he would work for the University of Texas San Antonio as the Director of Maintenance and Grounds for the Health Sciences building. He would retire from UTSA in the early 1990s.
Roy and Diane spent many years traveling together and playing music across the country. Roy and Diane were inseparable. They made many close and dear friends. Roy and Diane would eventually call New Braunfels their home and remained there until November 2019.
Roy is survived by his Daughters Karen Sue (Farley) Williams of Buckhannon, WV, Connie J. Farley Bachota of Pierceton IN, and Son Roy Allen Farley of Buckhannon WV. Roy had 5 grandchildren Kevin Williams, Bradley Williams, Kari Williams, David Bachota, and Bobby Farley, 7 Great GrandChildren and 1 Great-Great GrandDaughter.
Roy was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Diane Ruth (Heide) Farley, Mother Pearl Pratt (Farley) Sister Goldie Arbogast (Farley).
Visitation and services take place at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home 1701 Austin Hwy San Antonio TX 78218.
Visitation will be Monday January 8th starting at 11 :30 am with funeral services to follow at 1 pm. Burial Service will take place Tuesday January 9th, 10:30 am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of Flowers contributions may be made to St, Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Voice of Calvary Baptist Church to help with their food pantry ministry.
