Rose Chang Greer was 81, a native of Taiwan, and resident of San Antonio, Texas. A beautiful, generous, and loving person, she was surrounded by family as she passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 12, 2023. She is survived by her husband, Donald Greer, loving children Carmen (Ken) Hannah, George (Grace) English, Robert (Carole) English, and Donald (Hope) Greer; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; and five brothers and one sister. Preceded in death by daughter, Lisa Podsiadlo, her parents, Shih-Chien Chang and Jui-Chun Chang-Ali, a brother, Wu-Yung Chang, and sister, Jen Hwei Chang-Chen. She had a deep-rooted love for her family by constantly looking out for their well being and happiness. Born in Taipei, Taiwan on May 18, 1941, she became a naturalized United States citizen on December 10, 1962, in Agana, Guam.
A military wife and homemaker, she raised five children in Taiwan, Philippines, Panama, and the United States, and raised them herself when her husband was temporarily stationed in another country. She was deeply committed to loving her family and was most joyful being involved in their lives and doing what she could to ensure their wellbeing and happiness.
She was active in the Chinese and military communities. She managed military thrift shops, organized unit bowling leagues, performed volunteer work in military hospitals, gave Chinese culture speeches at public schools, organized wives clubs, and managed Chinese money clubs.
Considered one of her best experiences, she functioned as an interpreter for numerous dependent Chinese families while their husbands were English language students at Lackland Airforce Base, San Antonio, Texas. She helped them obtain housing, a driver’s license and insurance, resolve financial issues, and conducted community orientation.
Widely known as the “Cookie Lady,” she purchased and distributed cakes, cookies and wafers to doctors and nurses, and truly enjoyed handing out oriental wafers to employees in restaurants, banks, retail stores, and neighborhood families and children.
Things her friends and family will never forget, was her ability to cheer up folks when they were feeling bad, greeting everyone with her beautiful smile, and possessing a magnetic charm that enchanted everyone she met. Her children will never forget times she would threaten them with her “slipper” when they were a bit out of line.
She devoted time to the things she loved the most, going to Las Vegas, playing mahjong with good friends, collecting beanie babies and seashells, and planning family gatherings.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, San Antonio, Texas, on Monday, February 20, 2023, from 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (Shelter #2), February 21, 2023, from 10:15 AM – 10:45 AM.
