Ronald Keith Thomas died in Westhoff, Texas on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at 12:58PM, surrounded by his family. He was 81. His wide network of family, friends and neighbors held him close in heart, as he departed, following a long illness.
Born on September 7, 1940 to Boyce and Maggie Geneva Thomas in Tolbert, Texas, Ronald was a 1959 graduate of Vernon (Texas) High School. After serving on active duty with the U.S. Army for 20 years, he began a second 20-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in May of 2003. Ronald was a Vietnam veteran, honored with special military awards, including the Bronze Star, for meritorious service.
As a spectator and participant, Ron always loved sports. From the first time he picked up a baseball as a young boy, through watching the latest World Series, baseball was his special enjoyment. His competitive spirit could also be seen around a table of enthusiastic family or neighborhood, domino or card players. Simple moments meant a lot to Ron --- delicious meals, shared with loved ones, holding close the newest grandchild, or traveling along scenic highways --- these were the things that gave his life special meaning.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Boyce and Maggie Geneva Thomas; his siblings, Mervyn Thomas and Joyce Gillespie; brother-in-law Curley Gillespie; his niece, Rhonda Gillespie, and by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Thomas; sons Ronald Thomas, Jr., Michael, Joseph (wife Sandy), and Patrick Thomas; daughter, Amy Thomas; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous beloved in-laws.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy., in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday evening, March 8, beginning at 6:00PM, followed by recitation of the Rosary at 7:00PM. Interment will take place on Thursday, March 10, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. A Graveside Service will be held at 9:15AM (at Shelter # 2), with full military honors.
