Roland was born to Roland Louis Saathoff Sr. and Mildred Ruth Vance on December 15, 1946, in San Antonio, TX. Roland graduated from Jefferson high school and spent most of his life in the San Antonio area.
In 1966, at the young age of 19, Roland enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of Sergeant and served two tours in Vietnam. After returning from the war, he resumed civilian life and started a family.
Roland was most at home outdoors and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and taking the boat out on the water.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Patricia Tietze. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Julie Bailey Saathoff; his daughter, Jennifer Loughlin, and her husband, Sean; his son, Seth Saathoff, and his wife, Katy; his four grandchildren: Peyton and Evan Willis, and Reed and Bailey Saathoff; his sister, Sandra Coryell; his brother, Donald Saathoff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd.) on Monday, May 22 at 10:45. A reception and lunch will be held at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home (1701 Austin Hwy.) at 11:30.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project or other trusted charities that help veterans and their families.
