Maj. Gen. Roger J. Price, US Army Retired, 76 passed away on Monday, July 4, 2011. He was born in Paris, Arkansas on November 18, 1934 to Herbert and Elizabeth Erker Price. General Price held positions as platoon leader, company, troop, battalion, and brigade commander in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Armored Divisions in Europe and the United States. He served as the Chief of Staff, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood and later commanded the 1st Infantry Division (Forward) in West Germany. His staff assignments in Washington D.C. included Assistant Congressional Liaison Officer, Budget Analyst and Executive Officer to the Assistant Director of the Army Budget, Chief of the Congressional Budget Liaison Office, Office of the Director of the Army Budget. He was promoted to Brigadier General in December 1979 and served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Resource Management, Headquarters, United States Army Europe and Seventh Army and later Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters, United States Army Europe and Seventh Army, where in addition to his duties, he was the lead Army organizer of the 40th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. Price was promoted to Major General in July 1985 and became the 39th commander of the 2nd Armored Division June 24, 1986 where he led the division on the largest deployment to Europe since World War II as part of REFORGER 87 and oversaw several rotations to the National Training Center. He became Director of Army Budget in July 1988. He was the Deputy Commanding General, Headquarters, First Army and Fort George G. Meade before retiring in September 1990. His awards include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal. the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and the General Staff Identification Badge. Price graduated from Notre Dame with a BA in Economics. He received an MBA from Syracuse University and attended the United States Naval War College. Upon retirement, General Price was active in the Knights of Columbus, serving two terms as Grand Knight. He is survived by his loving wife, Carole Price; daughter, Lisa Price; son, Roger Price, Jr. and wife Melodie and grandson, Nicholas Price. The graveside service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 9:30 A.M. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
