Robin Michael Francis Leah Ellis was born April 6, 1932, in Chirk, North Wales. His mother was Daisy Irene Leah. His father was Reginald Francis Ellis. He is survived by his two brothers, John and Patrick, as well as his nieces Hillary and Hannah (Patrick's twin daughters.) Robin was married briefly to Jo Anne Mynard (a local TV personality) in Enterprise, Alabama on December 14, 1963, but divorced in August of 1967.
Robin came to the United States at the age of 18 in 1950. He enlisted in the Army. He served during the Korean War and in Vietnam, where he received three Bronze Stars and various meritorious certificates. He was a photo journalist for the War Department.
Robin's passion was military history and stamp collecting having amassed a large holding. His collection was distributed to five different archives here in San Antonio and most notably two vans worth of documents given to the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg.
Robin served on the Board of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Fort Sam Houston and assisted with the restoration of Stillwell House there on base. He volunteered with the San Antonio Historical Association having served as that organization's Treasurer and put in many hours volunteering with the San Antonio Conservation Society.
Robin was a gentleman. The quintessential soldier, an astute collector, and a superb preservationist. His contributions will be carried forth into the future through his generous donations to our local archives and museums.
