Robert Ray Lopez, better known as Red Dog, entered eternal life on December 21, 2022 at the age of 73. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on November 8, 1949 to Olivia Aguinaga Mercado and Edward Rey Lopez. A lively soul who was outgoing, loved by many, and a man who never met a stranger.
Robert graduated from Kennedy High School in 1969, where he discovered his passion for mechanics and cars. Shortly after graduating he was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed at Homestead AFB in Florida during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, Robert found his way back to mechanics to work on military planes in San Antonio, Texas at Kelly AFB. Robert’s talents expanded from there, as he became a jack of all trades (literally) and later worked as an electrician, carpenter, and plumber. Teaching his skills that he would be proud to pass on to his children, grandchildren, and anyone who was willing to learn.
Robert’s joy came from spending time with family, beach days in the sun, working in his garage with reggae music drowning out the noise, and of course sharing a cold one with his wife and friends under those neon lights. His pride in life was a job well done. He always found time to help family in their time of need and never complained about a hard day’s work, a trait likely passed down from his mother Olivia. His last act of service in life included him protecting his granddaughter - a sacrifice that will cement the many fond memories his family shares.
Robert will be reunited in heaven with his Grandmother, Isidra Aguinaga; Mother, Olivia A. Mercado; Uncle, David Cuellar; and Aunt, Isabel A. Cuellar.
Robert’s memory will forever live on, with his wife of 14 years, Ana Maria Lopez; children, Dolly Lopez, Robert Ray Lopez II, Bianca Rae Lopez and Christopher Ray Lopez; Grandchildren, Giovanna Muzquiz, Luna Lopez, Kate Lopez, Apollo Lopez, and Nova Lopez. Robert “Red Dog” will be missed by his extended family and many friends he has met along the way.
A memorial service for Robert will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Trevino Funeral Home. This will be a celebration of Red Dog’s life and his legacy. The military honors will begin at 11:30 AM, followed by the sharing of memories and prayers from family and friends.
