“The Bob” was born on August 21st, 1937 in Charleston, West Virginia to Richard and Ethel Alton. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and continued to support the mission for the span of his professional career in the U.S. Civil Service. On April 23, 1965, he wed Delores Faye Merritt. Together they raised two children, Traci Leigh and Brett Travis.
The Bob graduated from the University of Oklahoma, but he never let that hold him back (he would laugh at this). He served his country, he served his family, and he served his Lord. As a member of Riding The River Cowboy Fellowship in Bandera, Texas, he was an avid supporter of the Church and its activities as well as the message of God.
He was always, always, always there for his family and friends. Not just present…He was right there in the middle of things, supporting Traci and Brett through their many endeavors, victories, and especially their struggles, through which he served as their shepherd. He cheered for his granddaughters and loved them deeply. He loved his wife, Dee, with all of his heart and soul through their 55 years of marriage. He loved people, old cars and planes, barbecue, the Dallas Cowboys, and country music. Ray Price was his musical hero.
A singer-songwriter in his younger days, he spent many an evening entertaining Traci and Brett and Dee...and anyone else who was around... with his tunes and his loving smile. He introduced his kids to West Virginia, though he was a true Texan in his heart. He drove the family on treks across America so that they might spend time with relatives and know and love their roots. Great music was always on the radio.
Traci and Brett’s friends all looked up to The Bob and will all say that they respected and learned something from him. His lessons about life and how to treat your fellow man will live in the hearts and minds of all who met him. His eyebrows and his flat-top haircut were legendary.
Robert Lee Alton was preceded in death by his father, Richard, his mother, Ethel, and his beloved sister Ruth. He is survived by his wife, Delores, his daughter Traci Leigh, his son Brett Travis, his adored granddaughters, Kaitlyn Elizabeth and Taylor Grace, their mother Kelley, and his dear sister, Phyllis. Public Visitation will be held Thursday, September 10th, 2020 from 5-8 PM at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio Texas. Mr. Alton will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Patriot’s Day, an honor he earned.
