Richard Paul Smith passed away on June 13, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. Dick was born in Bismarck, ND November 12, 1929, and grew up in Jackson, Michigan with his parents and 6 siblings. After graduating high school, he joined the Marine Corp during the Korean War. While stationed in Santiago, Chile as a U.S. Embassy guard, Dick met and married his wife, Frances Scott. During their 46-year marriage, they raised 8 loving children. Both Dick and Frances were avid supporters of their children and parishioners at St Gregory Catholic Church. Dick and Frances were loving grandparents to 23 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
After Frances passed away in 1999, Dick married Anne Mullen in 2001. During their 22-year marriage, Dick became a strong fixture in the Mullen family, and stepfather to Anne’s 10 children. Following Anne’s passion of volunteering, Dick joined her as a Bluebird at Methodist Hospital for the past 16 years. Dick was a beloved grandfather to Anne’s 14 grandchildren on the Mullen side.
As an avid sports enthusiast, Dick was a baseball coach and umpire in the CYO leagues of San Antonio from 1965 – 1975. He was an active member of the Churchill Charger Booster Club from 1970 – 1983. Dick’s lifelong passion for golf, had him playing all the municipal courses in the San Antonio area as well as participating in several city leagues until November 2022. He gave many their first job when he managed Handy Andy grocery stores for 23-years and traveled extensively while working with Red Arrow Freight Lines. Over the years, Dick mentored many as well as touched all that he crossed paths with.
