

Richard T. “Dick” Schlosberg III, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, peacefully passed surrounded by his loving family on January 10, 2024 at age 79 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Dick was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma to Richard T. Schlosberg, Jr. and Helen Kopff Schlosberg on April 6, 1944. As a child of a military family, Dick lived in many places and graduated from high school in Seville, Spain. He went on to attend the United States Air Force Academy, graduating in 1965. Shortly after graduating, he married Kathy Carah, his childhood best friend and love of his life.
After five years of service in the Air Force, including two tours of duty in Vietnam, Dick earned his MBA from the Harvard Business School. Dick’s career in newspapers and publishing began not long after, with opportunities at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Harte-Hanks Communications, The Denver Post, and ultimately The Los Angeles Times where he served as President and Publisher until 1998.
Committed to service and leadership throughout his life, Dick then served as President and CEO of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. He retired from The Packard Foundation in 2004 and relocated to San Antonio to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
In San Antonio, Dick continued to focus on civic leadership, serving on the boards of The Tobin Center, The Bank of San Antonio, The San Antonio Report, The University of the Incarnate Word, Texas Biomedical Research Institute, the San Antonio Area Foundation and many others.
Dick treasured his roles as husband, father and grandfather. Always available to give advice, insight and support, Dick was a trusted advisor and mentor for his children and grandchildren. Watching his grandchildren grow and thrive brought him tremendous joy.
Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathy, son Rich Schlosberg (Kelly), daughter Deb Rich Herczeg (Joe) all of San Antonio, grandchildren Emily Schlosberg Bynum (Mike) of Cypress, Texas, Melissa Schlosberg Flocks (Connor) of Washington D.C., Ellie Rich, Kate Rich, Gavin Herczeg, great-grandchildren Blair Bynum and Beau Bynum, sisters Margie Long (Bill) and Kathy Dougherty (Gene), brother Bob Schlosberg (Joanne) all of Newark, Delaware and brother-in-law, John Carah of Appleton, Wisconsin, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Helen Schlosberg and sister Barbara Melikan (Mark).
The family is grateful for Dick’s doctors, his caregivers and hospice team during this difficult time.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78212.
