Renate Fuchs née Fernbach died peacefully on January 26, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. She was 93 years old. Mrs. Fuchs was born in Berlin, Germany on July 14, 1918 to Otto and Rose Fernbach. At the age of twenty, she abandoned her plans to study law, forced to flee Nazi Germany with her parents. They settled in Uruguay and immigrated to the United States in 1947. She married Frank Fuchs in 1952 in New York City. Mrs. Fuchs worked as a physical and massage therapist, and a translator. Besides her native German, she spoke fluent French, Spanish and English; she taught herself Portuguese and the Cyrillic alphabet. She was a skilled photographer, skier, ice skater and mountain climber. Most of all, Mrs. Fuchs will be fondly remembered for her keen sense of humor, her passion for traveling and her love for cats – especially those needing homes. These traits are mirrored in her six grandchildren, whom she taught so much. Mrs. Fuchs is survived by her daughters: Anita Younes and her spouse Nuri Younes, and Linda Fuchs; her grandchildren Gabriel, Adam and Sam Younes; Lily, Grace and Rose Miller; her niece, Gudula Khan. Preceding her in death are her husband, Frank, and their son, Peter Fuchs. Renate’s family extends their deepest gratitude to her cherished caregivers: Lucy Campos, Betty Gonzales and Catherine Norton. Our heartfelt thanks to Bradley Shipman M.D. at the Nix Medical Center for his years of kind attention and exceptional care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition at info@sanantonioferalcats.org. Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com.
