Ramon (Ray) Perez Pena, age 68, died August 16, 2017, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, after a long illness. He was born to John Pena and Refugia Perez Pena. He attended Coronado Elementary, Escobar Junior High and attended Edgewood high school where he enjoyed playing on the football team. He graduated high school on May 6, 1969, and later entered the Army that same year. He was honorably discharged years later with several medals including two bronze stars.
After his military service, he studied Law Enforcement at San Antonio college, and took night business courses at St. Philip’s College. He eventually found his calling as a construction safety manager for the companies Plank, United Rentals, and NTS. In his free time he enjoyed managing adult men’s football teams, and in 2000, his team the San Antonio Rush won the Texas Football League Championship.
Known as a tough manager at work and on the field, Ramon still held a soft spot for kids and the homeless. He and his football team enjoyed volunteering for the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner, the Methodist Children’s Hospital, Elf Louise, and the Calderon Boys and Girls Club, where he was given the honor of Coach of the Year. He, along with his wife Michelle, was also a member of the Lutheran church of the Resurrection, where he helped lead a church youth program and volunteered in several other church functions.
Ramon is preceded in death by one brother, Santiago Perez (who died at the age of five from Typhoid fever), one sister, Petra Carter (who passed away in 2015), his father, John, and his mother, Refugia. He is survived by his three children, Brenda Mauricio, Ruby Pena, and Ramon Pena Jr., his spouse Michelle Pena, his sisters Teresa Cruz and Feliz Rodriguez (husband Jacinto Rodriguez); brother John Pena (wife Lena); plus several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ray was a true blue fan of the Cowboys, and his favorite actor was John Wayne. It is with heavy hearts we wave our final goodbye to our own true blue cowboy, Mr. Ramon Perez Pena, as he takes his last ride into the Sunset.
Visitation for Ramon will be at 10:00am on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, Texas. A Celebration of Life service will be at 11:00am following the visitation.
