Orville Kenneth (O.K.) Harris died February 8, 2012. Kenneth was born in Plainview, Texas August 9, 1923. He lived in small towns across Texas as the family followed the highway construction in which his stepfather was employed. The family settled in San Antonio in 1939 where Kenneth graduated from Burbank High School. Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the Paratroops. He earned a Purple Heart in the invasion of Normandy and spent many months in Army hospitals. Kenneth received a BS Degree from Texas A&I University and an MA from Trinity University. He worked in the Northeast School District where he served as principal of Coker Elementary School for 11 years and principal of Oak Grove Elementary School for 9 years. During his career, O.K. was active in a number of civic and professional organizations. He was an avid outdoorsman who liked hunting and fishing. For fifteen years, O.K. managed one of the large booths at NIOSA as a volunteer for the San Antonio Conservation Society. In his retirement years he enjoyed carpentry, tending his large yard and watching and feeding the birds.
He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Mary Frances Rusmisel Harris.
He is survived by 3 children, including Judy Drott and husband Greg of Kyle and Darrell Harris and wife Patricia (Nina) of Bulverde; grandchildren, William Robert Harris and wife Monique of Austin, SGT Todd Harris Wilkes and wife Andrea of Ft. Hood, LTJG Cody Clay Harris of Jacksonville, FL; great grandchildren, Preston Legere and Riley Harris of Austin and a great grandson on the way; his brother, D.G. Harris and wife Omadell; sister, Patsy Miller and husband Walter; brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Dorothy Rusmisel and brother-in-law Douglas Sheedy.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 4PM to 6PM at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, February 13, 2012 at 12PM at Sunset Funeral Chapel. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Park.
