Ofelia A. Sanchez, also known as “Cha Cha,” was born January 25, 1925 in Laredo, Texas and returned to our Lord Jesus Christ on September 26, 2014 at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by parents, Jesus Arrambidez and Piedad Vargas Arrambidez; husband Jesus “Jesse” Sanchez and is survived by their children: Piedad Ruth Estrada (Arthur), Jesse Sanchez, Sam Sanchez (Jerrie), Simona Yvette Trevino (Victor); brothers, Roberto Santana and Daniel Garcia; 17 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren; numerous family members and friends. Ofelia spent her life teaching and caring for others. She loved to volunteer, helping as many people throughout the years. She was one of the first “Mamma Patrols” in the city and worked at J.T. Brackenridge with her wooden “stop” sign made by her husband. She became President of J.T. Brackenridge Elementary PTA and later taught there; also at Palm Heights Baptist Church School, and retired from Collins Garden Elementary with San Antonio ISD. Ofelia was a member of the Burbank Ex Students Association in 1989. She also had evacuation training from the Civil Defense and the American Red Cross at the Arsenal in the King William area. Additionally, she worked at refugee shelters at Lowell Middle School with the help of her family. Mrs. Sanchez was a member, board member, and teacher at Mexican Christian Church for over 50 years. While attending San Antonio College, she worked at Lutheran General Hospital, and received her Associates degree in 1966. She worked part time taking the school and city census, 1961-1970. She was President of the Mexican Christian Ladies Club and received a Lifetime member award from the San Antonio PTA. She enjoyed knowing parliamentarian procedure. Ofelia was very creative and liked to plan ahead. For many years she opened her home to students who needed extra tutoring for school. She loved to sing and loved her family and friends. She will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers with a “Celebration of Life” Evening Service at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will also be held at the funeral home at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, October 2, 2014. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery III. The family would like to thank Regent Care Center (3935 Medical Drive) for all their excellent care and to all her friends. A special thank you to her dear friend, Dr. Bob Babiak and his staff who treated Ofelia from 2006 to present.
