Nellie Mendez

Nellie Mendez was born on February 20, 1931 in San Antonio, to her parents, Jesus and Maria de Jesus Reyes. She married Alejandro “Humphrey” Mendez in 1955. They raised a family in San Antonio where Alejandro worked as an owner of a radiator shop while Nellie raised the family. She welcomed a son in 1956 with the birth of Alejandro “Alex” Mendez Jr. Her daughter Darnell Teresa Cervantes was born in October of 1957. Nellie dedicated her life to caring for her children and grandchildren (Nicolas, Natalie and Christopher). Nellie was not only a caregiver to her own children, but many others in our family. She had an endless amount of affection to give, and many lives were impacted by how deeply she loved others.

Nellie Mendez is survived by her son; Alex Mendez Jr., her daughter and son-in-law, Darnell and Jose Luis Cervantes; her grandchildren, Nicolas Vazquez, Natalie Cervantes, and Christopher Cervantes; her siblings, Frank “Paco” Reyes, Carlos Reyes, Carmen Maldonado, Celia Davis; her sister-in-law Irma Reyes; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alejandro Mendez Sr.; and her brother, Jesse “Chuy” Reyes.

Nellie Mendez’s rosary will take place on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. Her funeral mass will be held Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 9:45 a.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. Following mass, a burial will be held at San Fernando Cemetery #2. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nellie's life.
