Dr. Michael D. Howard, age 64, of San Antonio passed from his earthly moments to his eternal glory with Jesus on April 2, 2003 after a courageous battle against cancer. All who knew him will remember his ready smile, and words of encouragement for everyone he met. Dr. Howard was born in Abilene, Texas on July 7, 1938 to Duard Arthur Howard and Belva Jane Obenhaus Howard and moved to San Antonio with his parents at the age of four. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1956, he attended Trinity University on a basketball scholarship and later graduated first in his class at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. Among the many awards he received upon graduation, he was also awarded the Gold Headed Cane, an honor selected by fellow classmates and given to the one student who best symbolizes the ideals of the true physician. After an internship at the Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio, he returned to Galveston and completed two years of residency in obstetrics, and then completed a three-year residency in radiology. Dr. Howard returned to San Antonio in 1969 and began teaching at the University of Texas Health Science Center as associate professor of Radiology. He later entered into private practice. He practiced interventional radiology from 1969-1996 when he was medically retired due to an injury. He also served in the US Army Reserves for two years. An avid family man, Dr. Howard enjoyed spending time with all of his children and grandchildren. After retirement, he especially enjoyed watching his youngest son, Geoffrey as he grew in his relationship with Jesus and as he worked on his golf game. He moved with his wife Jeanne and son Geoffrey to Florida in August 2001 to help further his son's desire to improve his golf game. Shortly after his move to Florida, he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and returned with his family to San Antonio in August 2002. Dr. Howard was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church for 32 years and loved the Lord with all his heart. After retirement from medicine he volunteered regularly at the Trinity Baptist Church prayer room, mentored a local elementary school, attended Bible Study Fellowship for six years, and wrote a book of Christian essays called "X-rays Of The Soul".
