Mary was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 7, 1928, and attended Lanier High School. Mary met her sweetheart Raul when she was only 15 and he was 16. He courted her and told her he would marry her when he came back from serving in the military. They were married on April 6, 1948, and had just celebrated their 75th anniversary before she passed away. Together they raised seven children whom she devoted her whole life to. Mary worked at Kress and Judson Candies early in her marriage but in later years, she stayed home and took care of her family. Mary was loved by all her children and was always cooking her delicious meals for her family. They have fond memories of coming home to home cooked meals and freshly made tortillas! She always fed everyone when they came to visit!
She was devoted to the Virgen de San Juan and would often travel to the Shrine of the Virgen de San Juan in McAllen, Texas to make her “promesas” to the Virgen. She would never allow her loved ones to leave the house until she gave them a blessing. She always prayed for everyone, especially if they were going on a trip, starting a new job, or taking an exam. Her prayer life was so strong, and she was deep in her faith.
She loved to listen to music and watch soap operas both in English and Spanish. In her later years, she enjoyed time at home with her husband Raul making him his favorite meals and spending the holidays with her children and grandchildren.
She will be remembered for being a wonderful mother, grandmother and most importantly, a devoted wife. Although our hearts are broken that she is no longer with us, we will forever hold her in our hearts until we see her again. She will be truly missed by her family.
