Mary Emma Cook passed away in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 93 years on January 7, 2015. She was born on February 4, 1921 in Oakland, California to Lt. Commander (U.S. Navy) Hilmer A.A. and Mary E. Schmidt (Haverly). As a Navy brat she moved many times in the United States and completed her education at Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas where she met and later married CMSgt Ivy D. Cook, Sr. on August 7, 1939. Together they had four children and traveled the world as his post of duty changed until they settled in San Antonio, Texas in 1962 where her husband later retired after 30 years in the Air Force and then he completed another 20 years in civil service. She participated with her husband in church, Masonic and Shrine activities. They were very interested in the local youth and worked along with their own children in the U.S. and Japan to encourage other children to participate in activities with the church Sunday school (Protestant and Presbyterian Churches), the Boy Scouts of America, the Order of the DeMolay and the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Together they helped form the first DeMolay Chapter and resulting Conclave and the first Rainbow Assembly in Japan. Mary was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Japan, California and Texas. Adah Chapter No. 49, Order of the Eastern Star in Helotes, Texas was the last chapter to which she was a member. Mary was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She liked to play Bingo and bridge and was a marvelous cook with her home always serving as a favorite gathering place for her children's friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 69 years, Ivy D. Cook, Sr., her sister, Jacqueline Cook of Mt. Vernon, Washington; two brothers, Robert Schmidt of Melbourne, Australia and George Schmidt of California. She is survived by her two daughters, Lorraine "Lorrie" Owens (husband Jerry) of New Braunfels and Rosemary Cook of San Antonio, and her two sons, Dr. Ivy D. Cook, Jr., Lt. Col. USAF retired (wife Carma) of San Antonio and James M. Cook (wife Mary Wyatt) of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren, Suzzette Faith of Carrollton, Texas, Dee-Annette Faith of New Braunfels, Bert R.Stribling of North Little Rock, Arkansas, B.J. Cook of Austin, David Cook of California, Audra Cantrell of North Carolina, Ian Cook of San Antonio, Joey Vendetti of San Antonio, Anthony Vendetti of San Antonio, Tina Gutierrez of Converse, Texas, Anna Marie Perrin of Pipe Creek, Texas, Dominick Vendetti of Houston, Felicia Martinez of San Antonio, Jennifer Cook of Arlington, Texas, Jame Garnett of Lewisville, Texas, Joshua Cook of San Diego, California and Dr. Jered Cook of New York City; 25 great-grandchildren; and 4 great- great-grandchildren.
Adah Chapter No. 49, Order of the Eastern Star, will perform an Eastern Star Funeral Ceremony at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas at 2:45 P.M. on Tuesday, January 20, 2015.
