LtCol. Marvin J. Hess, USAF Retired and CPA, passed away Friday, July 9, 2021 at the age of 93. He was born in Graceville, Minnesota on May 20, 1928. One of eight children of Jessie and Albert Hess, he was the last survivor.
He is survived by his wife, Jeraldyne (Jerry); two sons and their families, Murray & Cathy, Marshall & Blainey; and his much loved grandchildren, Christopher and Katherine.
Marvin joined the Air Force immediately after high school in Hankinson, North Dakota. He advanced through several training schools and officer’s training school and as a fairly new Lieutenant he was assigned as a communication officer in Korea during the Korean War. Returning to the U.S. he was stationed at Lackland AFB. He was then assigned to training at Scott AFB. In 1954 he met Jerry when assigned to an early warning radar site in Minnesota. They were married July 8, 1956 and she joined him on overseas tours in Bangkok, Thailand and Buenos Aires, Argentina where Marv was an advisor to the countries’ Air Forces. In 1968 our little family, Murray, Marshall, Jerry and Marv arrived in San Antonio. Marv retired from the Air Force in 1972 and immediately finished his college education. Earning a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Our Lady of the Lake and a Master’s at Trinity. After passing the CPA exams he worked at GPM Life Insurance where he had his second career as Vice President and Treasurer. He decided to retire at 65 to travel and enjoy life in San Antonio. In 2010 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease which ultimately took his life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his family.
The Funeral Mass will be 12 noon, Friday, July 16, 2021 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 102 Lorenz, San Antonio, TX 78209. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
