Martha Sue Garrett was born in Obion, Tennessee, and was a graduate of Miller-Hawkins Business School in Memphis. Sue went on to become a runway fashion model during and after World War II and then a buyer in Women’s and Couture at Levy’s department store in Memphis.
After the war, Sue married Morris William Roettger, a B-17 and B-24 Army Air Corps/Air Force pilot in Europe and the Pacific, who subsequently flew B-29s in Korea. They had one daughter, Brenda Ray Coffee, a resident of Boerne, Texas. After the death of her first husband, Sue worked for the Red Cross and managed a retail store at North Star Mall in San Antonio. In 1972 she married banker, PB “Jack” Garrett, Sr., and moved to Dallas. After Jack’s death, Sue was Chairwoman of the Freedoms Foundation National Awards Program; she was active in Dallas Toast Mistress, and she continued to work in retail at the Apparel & Accessories Mart in Dallas. Sue was a dedicated student of meditation, God’s word and the writings of spiritual author and healer, Joel Goldsmith.
In 2010, Sue moved to San Antonio. Her daughter extends her heartfelt appreciation to the compassionate nurses and caregivers at The Haven Dementia facility. She also gives special gratitude and appreciation to Jeff, her mother’s nurse, and the other hospice caregivers and chaplains with Vitas Healthcare, who made her last year more comfortable.
A service will be held Tuesday, October 27th, at Sunset North Funeral Home in San Antonio. Burial will be at Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, where Sue will be buried alongside her mother, Laura Douglas. In lieu of flowers, her daughter requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in Sue Garrett’s name. http://www.alzfdn.org/ContributetoAFA/makeadonation.html
