Beautiful and deeply beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and wonderfully kind friend to all the people whose paths she crossed, Marjorie “Marjie” Lee Scharff, maiden name Sanders, born December 17, 1940, has passed away after a difficult and lengthy battle with Dementia. Before being afflicted by this terrible illness, she lived every waking moment with her beautiful spirit and love of life and nature. A certified Master Gardener, she filled her yard with a garden overflowing with papayas, fruit trees, and the gorgeous flowers with which she surrounded herself and her family, whom she loved unconditionally.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Ora Louise Morgan, who died when Marjie was eight years old; her father, Richard Brumfield Sanders; her one-of-a-kind brother-in-law Harry Mazal, and half-sister Marilyn McCombs. She is survived by the love of her life, devoted husband of nearly 60 years, Robert Lynn Scharff, whom she met at Texas Tech University, where she was a beauty pageant queen and a journalism major who was the editor of the Yearbook. She is also survived by her sons Alex Joseph Scharff, (wife Laurie Michelle Scharff), and Matthew Sanders Scharff, (wife Melissa Dawn Scharff); grandchildren Brooks Alexander Scharff and Kaiman Lee Scharff, Tyson Christopher Scott, Christopher Chase Adams, and Garrett Tyler Adams She is also survived by her sister Jerry Mazal, niece Aimee Mazal, and nephew Daniel Mazal. She enjoyed special familial relationships with her cousin, Luann Guerrant Galban, sister-in-law Suzanne Jackson and their families. Marjie’s long term friends from high school and college, known as “The Dollies,” had a special place in her heart. Marjie annually reunited with Peggy Jones, Pat Lewis, Lynn Holaday, Nancy Roberts, Polly Smart and Cheri Musick to travel to Greece, New Mexico, and other exotic destinations. The family would like to thank all the staff and nurses from Seasons Alzheimer’s and Assisted Care facility.
A recognized Fiber Artist, Marjie’s infectious love of all things beautiful inspired her to crochet, create stained glass butterflies, weave pictures of her friends, and hand-make beautiful, unique quilts that she created for her family, friends, and for people in need. She also loved elephants and beautiful music, especially the singer Shawn Phillips. She was vibrant, full of life, love, laughter, and compassion. Marjie immersed herself in peace by engaging in transcendental meditation, yoga, and the unique dancing exercise, Nia. She loved nature, and always treasured living in Oregon, longing to return there.
She is deeply missed by us all but will live forever in our hearts and memories. When we reminisce about Marjie, we will immediately be filled with peace, love, and sunlight, but most importantly, we will have a huge smile, knowing that she lived her incredible life to the fullest.
A funeral service for Marjie will be held Friday, September 24, 2021 from 3:00 PM at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232.
