Beloved daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend Marisa Huerta passed away at the age of 54 on April 24, 2023. She was born on October 23, 1968 to Juan and the late María Gutiérrez Huerta in Freeport, Texas.
Marisa loved traveling, preparing delicious meals for family and friends, dining, shopping, spending time with her nieces, and reading. Marisa always knew the latest fashion trends and the best restaurants.
In 1973 the family moved to nearby Lake Jackson, and in 1987 she graduated from Brazoswood High School. She thrived academically, and went on to attend Harvard University where she earned her AB degree in 1992.
She then went to Brown University where she earned a PhD in English literature and began a career in academia. She had several academic positions, including student advising, before changing careers and enrolling in law school. She earned a JD degree from Rutgers University School of Law in Camden, NJ in 2020.
She served as law clerk for Judge Thomas W. Sumners of the New Jersey Appeals Court, then accepted a position as an attorney with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, DC, where she was employed at the time of her death.
Marisa was preceded in death by her mother, María Gutiérrez Huerta. She is survived by her father, Juan; her brothers Juan Carlos (Rebecca) and Marcos (Clare); nieces Isabela, Susana, and Catherine; and her aunts, uncles, and cousins. Her intellect, humor, and bold spirit will be deeply missed.
Honorary Pallbearers are Ken Lehr, Stephanie and Michael Apolinar, Frank Humberto Ortiz, Joe Perez, Anthony Perez, and Cynthia Perez.
Visitation is Wednesday, May 31, 2023 from 5-9 PM with the Holy Rosary at 7 PM at Roy Akers Funeral Home, 515 N. Main Ave, San Antonio. The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 10:00 AM at St. Luke Catholic Church, 4603 Manitou Dr. San Antonio, with the Graveside Service following at 11:30 AM at San Fernando #2.
Marisa created a memorial fund at Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research (www.alzinfo.org) for her mother María, and donations can be made there in her honor.
