Maria Ferrer Tovar

Maria Ferrer Tovar was born in San Antonio, Texas in the Espada Mission area on November 17, 1936. She passed away on October 28, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving husband and family. Her husband, Baltasar, was devoted to her and they had recently celebrated their 69 years of marriage.

Her family includes her four daughters Dora Ann Verde and husband Henry, Diane Tovar and husband Jesse Martinez, Sandra Tovar and her partner Melissa Powe, and Deborah Tovar Delgado. She was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Louise Tovar Sanchez. She was much loved by her grandchildren Patricia Verde and husband Robert Aguinaga, Roberto Sanchez and husband Victor Galvan-Rico, Leah and Matilda Delgado, and Ariana Tovar. She was always happy to see her great granddaughter Zoey Aguinaga.

She is also survived by her brothers Frank Ferrer, Jose Augustine Ferrer and Clemente Ferrer. She was preceded in death by her sister Matilde Robinette and her brothers Mercedes Ferrer and Antonio Ferrer. She is survived by numerous extended family members and friends.

Her life centered around her family and home and she used her many skills to provide for her family and beautify her home. Her talents included being an excellent cook and she would prepare the traditional tamales and even gourmet dishes. Her talents as a seamstress kept her busy sewing curtains and other decorative items for her home. She had a green thumb and had numerous plants but also kept a garden where she grew vegetables. She was self- taught but she assisted her husband as his company secretary and bookkeeper.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care that was extended to our Mom by Gracie, her hospice nurse, by Deborah, her hospice aide, and by our sister, Deborah Tovar Delgado. In addition, we will be forever grateful for the excellent care she received from her granddaughter, Leah Delgado who went above and beyond our expectations and certainly fulfilled the frequent ice cream runs to satisfy Mom’s sweet tooth.

A rosary and service will be held Thursday November 2, 2023 at 7:00 pm at Sunset North Funeral Home at 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio TX 78232. The family will welcome visitors starting at 5 p.m.

A 9:00 a.m. prayer service will be held at Sunset North Funeral Home on Friday, November 3, 2023 prior to the procession to Fort Sam Houston where there will be a 10:45 a. m. service.
