She was born on January 11, 1963, in Mission, Texas, to Lazara Vallejo Gutierrez and Agapito Munoz Rivera. Affectionately known as “Angelita” by her family—a nickname lovingly given to her at a young age—Maria carried that name with grace throughout her life. We all came to learn her nickname later on and agreed she had unknowingly lived up to it in every way—an angel in both spirit and heart.
Maria graduated from Luis W. Fox Academic and Technical High School in 1982, where she met the love of her life, Jesse Vera. Their bond grew strong from those early years, and they would go on to share 35 beautiful years of marriage, raising a family and building a life grounded in love, laughter, and mutual support. She went on to earn her degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio in 1986, and later in life, proudly shared her alma mater with her daughter, Sierra Vera, who also graduated from St. Mary’s University—continuing a legacy of education and achievement.
Maria built a successful career with the Finlay Fine Jewelry Corporation, where she rose to the position of Regional Manager. She was most well known for her work at Foley’s, later known as Macy’s, throughout San Antonio. After years of dedication, Maria took a break from her career to spend more time with her children, cherishing those years of being present with her family. She later returned to the workforce as a representative with the Bulova Watch Company until her retirement. Along the way, she met countless individuals whom she stayed in touch with for years to come, celebrating their milestones and sharing in their joys. Her ability to form lasting connections was one of her greatest gifts.
Maria loved gardening, attending sporting events, and traveling. She was most often found outside tending to her plants—especially in the early mornings or late afternoons—watering, pruning, and speaking to them with the same care and tenderness she gave to everyone in her life. Her yard reflected her gentle touch and vibrant spirit, and neighbors often caught a glimpse of her in her element, lovingly caring for her garden. Maria had a particular talent for growing roses and often shared her knowledge and advice with others who sought her help. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether dining out, celebrating at local fiestas, or visiting wineries.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Known for her kindness and generosity, Maria was always ready to support others in their time of need. Her warmth and compassion left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Maria was especially proud of her son, Anthony Vera, and his recent accomplishment of joining the San Antonio Fire Department—a department that holds deep meaning for their family, as her husband Jesse proudly retired from SAFD after 35 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Lazara Vallejo Gutierrez and Agapito Munoz Rivera. Maria is survived by her beloved husband, Jesse Vera; her children, Anthony Vera and Sierra Vera; and her brothers, Javier Munoz (Tanusca) and Agapito Munoz (Teresa). She also leaves behind many caring in-laws and numerous loving nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her dearly and strive to live with the same grace, strength, and love that she embodied.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
A memorial service celebrating Maria’s life will be held the following day, Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
