Maria Teresa Garcia, 94, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on June 2, 2023. She was born in Laredo, Texas and married Fidel Garcia in 1946. After living in Laredo for many years, she and Fidel made their home in San Antonio. She was a “stay-at-home mom” raising and protecting her 10 children. As her children grew and started their own families, she cared for and nurtured many of her grandchildren over the years. Then, as her grandchildren grew and they began to have their own families, she continued to care for and nurture her great-grandchildren. Most recently, she was able to meet her great, great grandchild, Preslee. She was called mama, mami, grandma, and, more recently, Aya or Mama Coco. She was truly the epitome of a matriarch: strong, fearless, and self-sufficient. She imparted on the woman of the family such virtues and qualities. She never got a driver’s license but that never stopped her from going wherever she wanted to go whenever she wanted to go. She spoke her mind, and we all listened and learned. We are going to miss her laugh, her touch, and her wisdom. We did not want her to go but we take great comfort in knowing that she is now with her mother, Eugenia Hernandez, whom she deeply loved and adored. She was also preceded in death by her husband Fidel A. Garcia, her loving sons Fidel Garcia, Jr. and Hector Garcia and her beloved daughter Luz Maria Carrasco. She is survived by her children Carlos Garcia, Yolanda Purser (Buford Purser), Victor Garcia (Olga Garcia), Jaime Orlando Garcia, Rose Rodriguez (Victor Rodriguez), Martha Fernandez (Joe Fernandez) and Nidia Hinojosa (Joe Hinojosa), 22+ grandchildren, 18+ great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Rosary will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Rd.; and a Mass will be held on June 7, 2023 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 210 St. Ann at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at San Fernando Cemetery No. 2.
