Lydia was born to Emilio and Carolina Garcia on February 18, 1925, in San Antonio Texas. She was the second eldest daughter of the twelve children and as a child experienced the hardships of the Great Depression. Lydia graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1943 and worked in shipping & receiving at Kelly Air Force base during World War II. She married Lupe Avila in 1947 and together they founded Danny's Drive Inn in 1969 serving the San Antonio community until their retirement.
She was active in her community during her retirement years, singing with Christ the King Catholic Church choir and working part time at Danny's and Roy's Taco Hut, her son's restaurants, serving coffee and chatting with the regulars while sporting colorful San Antonio Spurs attire.
Lydia will be remembered as a loving daughter, wife, mom, and grandmother who was a sports enthusiast. The San Antonio Spurs were her #1 sports team followed by the Dallas Cowboys and cheering for them was one of her favorite pastimes, but she found nothing more exhilarating than going saltwater fishing off the gulf of Mexico just waiting to snatch the big one.
Lydia is survived by her children, Daniel Avila (Irma), Glenda Loza (Leo), Roy Avila (Elaine), Rodney Avila (Diana, deceased); siblings, Gloria Reyes, Sylvia Mitchell, David and Juan Garcia; grandchildren, Jeffery Avila, Roxanne Avila Escamilla, Gina Lydia Rode, Larry Loza, Christopher Avila, Vanessa Avila Thomas, Matthew Avila and Brandon Avila.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emilio and Carolina Garcia, husband Lupe Avila, sisters Henrietta Flores, ALice Gonzales, Carrie Morales, brothers Miguel, Emilio Jr., Gilbert, and Rudy Garcia and daughter- in- law Diana Avila. May the Lord's guiding light lead her straight to heaven's gate to reunite with her beloved family.
