Luciano Armando Ortiz

Luciano Armando Ortiz, age 93, was born in San Antonio, Texas on August 12, 1927 and passed away on Monday, August 2, 2021 at home with his family. He is preceded in death by both of his parents, Luciano and Rosa Ortiz, and he is survived by his daughters; Linda, Rose Ann, and Patricia, and his grandson; Joshua.

Mr. Ortiz served honorably in the Unites States Army both during World War II (1t Armored Division – Old Ironside) and the Korean War (25th Infantry Division, 27th Infantry Regiment). While he was stationed in occupied Japan, the North Koreans attacked South Korea on 25 June 1950. The 25th was alerted the first week in July to prepare for movement to Korea with the advance party landing at Pusan on 8th July. From the time he landed in Pusan until he was rotated back to the states in August 1951, Mr. Ortiz was in almost contact with enemy forces.

For his honorable service in both World War II and the Korean War he was awarded U.S. Army Gold Wreath for unit meritorious service, WWII Occupation Medal (Japan), United Nations Korean Service Medal, U.S. Army Korean Service Medal with six battle stars, U. S. Army Meritorious Unit Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Medal, and the U. S. Army Good Conduct Medal. In addition, for action under fire in Korea while assigned as an infantryman with the 25th, he was awarded the distinguished Combat Infantry Badge.

After the Korean War, he was employed and later retired from Kelly Air Force Base as an electrical mechanic.

Mr. Ortiz was a dedicated, long time member to both the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW Post #9186 and West Side plojtos, Order of the Cutties) and Alamo Chapter #298 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA).

A Visitation for Luciano will be held Sunday, August 22, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers, 515 North Main Ave, San Antonio, TX 78205. The Funeral Procession will leave the funeral home at 9:15 AM for Mass on Monday, August 23, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1314 Fair Avenue #1, San Antonio, TX 78223. There will be a live stream at church on their Facebook Page (STMMRitualMasses) and on their Youtube (St Margaret Mary SA). A Committal Service will follow afterwards at 11:30 AM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for a newly designed San Antonio Korean War Memorial (to be erected by the Korean Pavilion in Denman Park), be sent in his name to KWVA Korean War Memorial Fund, 18207 Newcliff, San Antonio, Texas 78259.
