Lisa Salazar was born Huong Thi Thai, on October 31, 1952, in Vietnam. She came to the United States as a refugee with her infant daughter, Marie, in 1975. Lisa’s start on her path to becoming a United States Citizen was met with many challenges. Thankfully she was able to reunite with her dear friend Faye Fette who she had met in Vietnam during the war. Faye sponsored and adopted Lisa providing her the maternal guidance she longed for, since her birth mother passed away when she was 12 years old. She came to a country with nothing but the clothes on her back, little understanding of the culture and a huge language barrier. She worked hard to quickly learn the language and begin creating a life for herself. Her journey in the United States started in Leesville, Louisiana and then to San Antonio, Texas. In San Antonio, she met her future husband, Edmund Salazar. They had a loving marriage of 32 years until Edmund’s untimely death in 2008.
While most people will remember her as being a loving wife and mother, Lisa was able to accomplish so much more for herself. She overcame her language barrier and went on to obtain her GED. She accomplished her dream of becoming a Naturalized United States Citizen and was eternally grateful for the country that took her in and allowed her to create the best life for her and her family. In addition, Lisa was quite the entrepreneur. She was a seamstress, an amazing cook who owned two successful restaurants, co-owner of an appliance repair business, elderly caregiver, volunteer for the elderly, writer, sculptor, and painter.
Lisa was kindhearted and never knew a stranger. Her home was known for the place of family gatherings where an extraordinary feast of more food than could be eaten by an army was served. She honored her guests with a wide variety of food and desserts, including American, Vietnamese, and Mexican food.
Lisa is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Marie and Gabe Simonds; Stephanie and Kevin Knox; and Angeline Salazar, grandchildren Mackenzie and Emma and Darian.
She was preceded in death by her adopted Mother, Faye Fette; her husband, Edmund Salazar; her son, Andrew Salazar and her grandchildren Angel Michelle Knox, Nathanial James Knox and Mathew Marcus Knox.
