Born “Jung Hi Kim” in 1936 just outside Seoul, Korea, she was the youngest of six children. In her late teens and early 20’s she worked as a typing clerk at the US Army base in South Korea and on evenings and weekends she worked as a cocktail waitress. Working all the time allowed her to save enough to build a custom home which she was very proud of accomplishing before she was 25. She would always say “It’s not how much you make; it’s how much you save”.
Kim met her husband Aldean Nelson in Seoul, Korea at the US Army Base. They both liked to dance and met each other when they signed up for a dance group on Base and became dance partners. They looked so good dancing together whether it was a waltz, polka or two-step. They were married in Seoul, Korea, then moved to the United States in 1962 where their first daughter was born. They had two more daughters, one in 1963 and another in 1964. Kim became a naturalized US citizen in 1965. A military family, they moved every few years and were never in one place very long.
In the early 80’s they moved to San Antonio, TX to settle down and retire. After the children were grown and Kim found herself divorced, she decided to become her own boss. She loved growing flowers and plants so she purchased the Foliage Factory in 1984 and renamed the plant nursery Accent Plant. Kim pretty much did everything and ran Accent Plant by herself for 40 years with the exception of her daughter, Sandra. It was because of Sandra’s willingness to spend her free time doing work at the greenhouse throughout those 40 years that allowed Kim more time to do what she liked to do most - selling and propagating plants.
Kim was always fun to be around, loved her children and grandchildren, loved to dance, loved her plants and mostly loved life. She liked to play Chess and Ping Pong, but her favorite hobby was playing Blackjack at the casinos. She kept her mind sharp with all the strategy it takes to win at those types of games.
Kim will be remembered by her three children Deborah (Mark) Muellich, Sandra (Greg) McGehee, and Lisa Miller; grandchildren Matthew (Christina) McGehee, Jeffrey McGehee, Krista Miller, and Steven McGehee; ex-husband and friend Aldean; as well as numerous extended family members and her friends and customers.
Kim was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and brother.
