Dr. Kenneth W. Staggs, age 85, passed away April 2, 2017 in Schertz, Texas. He was born in Hollis, Oklahoma, May 4, 1931. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed.
Kenneth was an American Literature Professor at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas for 25 years. During his tenure, he was awarded a Fulbright Distinguished Teaching Award to teach English for one year in South Korea. After he retired from Trinity University, he received many letters and phone calls from his former students referring to his extensive knowledge of William Faulkner, the famous author and Noble Prize Winner for Literature. Dr. Staggs' students referred to his class as the "Faulker" class. His knowledge of William Faulkner amazed his students as well as peer professors at Trinity. Many felt that his knowledge of Faulkner was limitless. Dr. Staggs also had a keen interest in William Shakespeare and spent a summer in England researching the writings of Shakespeare through the Oxford Bodleian Library in London. Kenneth received his Bachelor's Degree from Baylor University. He received his Master's and Doctorate Degrees from the University of Texas in Austin.
He is survived by his wife, Johnnie Walker-Staggs; one sister, Frances Truslow; daughters; Sabrina Strawn (Mark) and Sylvana Strawn (Trey); son, Kenneth H. Staggs; stepson, Dr. Edward Carl Elder(Bonnie); stepdaughter, Pamela Elder Huewitt (Kenneth); Grandchildren: Kevin Austin Strawn, Sandra Faye Strawn, Leah Louise Strawn, Silas Christopher Strawn, Hunter Huewitt, Cailin Wallace, Hailey Huewitt, Marissa Elder and Cydney Vaughn; sister-in-law, Shirley Tillman and husband Dr. Walter Tillman; extended family, Francine Prosser -Johnson and a host of family and friends.
The Memorial Service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, 1701 Austin Hwy., San Antonio, Texas 78218, phone (210) 828-2811. A private graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park at a later date.
