Julia P. Robles, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016. She lived with her grandson Gaspar Melendez Jr and his son Gasper III. She was the daughter of the late Eusebio and Jesusa Perez, and was one of 10 children. She married the late Jose D. Rodriguez, a widower with four sons, Eliseo, Joe (Susie) Juan and Albert (Blanca). Together they raised six children, Amelia, Sabrina (Douglas) Jarrett, Lulu Melendez, Julie Bermea, Jose (Rachel) and Isabel (Robinson) Bassat. She is preceded in death, by her parents, five of her siblings, her late husband Jose D. Rodriguez, a step son, Juan and two daughters, Amelia and Lulu. She was a Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great-Great Grandmother.
Julia was lovingly called “Mamacita” by many. She enjoyed family time. She is affectionately remembered by many nieces and nephews as the Aunt that loved picnics and BBQs and played volleyball and softball with them. She loved to cook for everyone and could whip up a brunch in no time at all. Mamacita loved God’s creation and loved spending time outdoors. Her morning routine consisted of reading scripture and daily reflections while sitting outside enjoying nature. She enjoyed watching the sun rise and set. She loved looking at the moon and the stars and enjoyed feeding the birds. She loved being at the coast and at Canyon Lake and loved to fish. Her family and relatives have many fond memories of their trips there. Her last trip to Corpus was for her granddaughter’s wedding where Mamacita was in the center of many family pictures after getting over the shock that the wedding was to take place at the beach.
When she first married, she learned to drive semi trailers and assisted her husband when he was a truck driver. She attended St. Phillips nursing school where she earned a Nurse Assistant Certificate but after completing the course, she thought she was not cut up for nursing. She worked most of her life working as a Housekeeping Supervisor for San Pedro Manor, then later for O’Krent Fabrics, as the Supervisor for the Shipping Department. Later after she retired, she became the caretaker for several relatives which included her parents, a sister in law, her second husband “Granpa Joe”, and her daughter, Lulu.
She loved long car trips. Her car trips included the Frontera in Mexico, the Our Lady of San Juan Shrine, Georgia and Florida, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, SC, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, Biloxi, MS, and several casino trips to Lake Chares and Coushatta, LA. She had hoped to visit her Step son in Kankakee, IL, but her health did not permit her to make that long trip. She also traveled by plane to Valley Forge to attend a wedding of one of her daughters. Her second home was in the Austin and Cedar Park, Texas area.
Mamacita was a faith filled woman and a great prayer warrior. Relatives, neighbors and friends always called on her to pray for them. Her home looked like a shrine. One of her favorite frames was a large picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe that was given to her by one of daughters. She also loved the image of the Divine Mercy and encouraged everyone to pray to that image. Her favorite saints were St. Theresa of the Little Flower and Padre Pio. Her favorite church was St. Jude. Mamacita loved the Lord with all her heart and she always said that when she died, she would ask God to allow her to warn her children if they were ever in danger. Let’s hope God gives her the grace to do so.
The family is thankful to the Lord for allowing Mamacita to be a part of their lives for so many years. She will be greatly missed and we pray that she will continue to intervene on our behalf to the Lord.
