Jovita Cardenas

Jovita Cardenas of San Antonio, Texas passed away quietly on Friday, April 21, 2023 at the age of 99. She was surrounded by family members at the time of her death. Jovita was born February 17, 1924 in Lockhart, Texas where she spent her early years until the family moved to San Antonio. She was the daughter of Cruz Contreras and Maria Reyna, both of whom emigrated from Mexico years before her birth.

Jovita was the youngest of five children, all of whom preceded her in death.

Jovita attended Sidney Lanier Junior-Senior High School. Throughout her career, she worked as a clerk at various San Antonio grocery stores and, for several years, owned and operated a lounge located on Culebra Road in the St Mary’s University area.

In addition to her parents and siblings, Jovita was preceded in death by her son-in-law Edward Meza, her grandson Edward Meza Jr., and her great-granddaughter Alicia Cardenas. She is survived by her six children Mary Louise Meza, Olivia Dever and her husband Tony, Alice Guerrero and her husband Julio, Luis Cardenas Jr and his wife Josie, Suzanne Brouse and her husband John, and Cynthia Moralez and her husband Enrique; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Linda Harris, Da’Maris Tinajera. Nicole LaBron, Chaplain Brenda White, and the staff at Abundant Hospice Home for the care and compassion they showed Jovita in her final days.

Friends and family will be received at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home located at 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio on Monday evening, May 22, 2023 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm with a Rosary beginning at 7:00pm. A funeral service will be held the next day, Tuesday May 23rd beginning at 10:00am at the Sunset Northwest Funeral Home with interment to follow at Cordi-Marian Resurrection Cemetery located at 11624 Culebra Road, San Antonio. Chaplain Brenda White will be officiating the services.
