He leaves his wife, Mary Winters, two brothers (Jerry Ray and Terry Scott Whitson) and three children: Gretchen Cilay Whitson Berner with her two children, Matthew David Whitson, and Megan Lynae Whitson Gonzales with her 2 children.
His life's work included numerous vocations, but his favorite was teaching, He taught courses in biology and chemistry to over 35,000 students during his lifetime at St. Phillips College (for 30 years), and instructed part time at UTSA, San Antonio College, the University of the Incarnate Word, and St. Mary's University at various times.
His other jobs included assorted odd jobs as well as carrying mail, medical and burn research, computer programming, health statistics and writing. He served in the Army for 4 years at the ISR/Burn Center and his combined civilian government service totaled 19 years.
He held degrees from Austin College (BA and BS, 1975), Incarnate Word (MS, 1982), and the University of Texas at Austin (Ph.D., 1996) as well as certification as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (St. Phillips College, 2008).
He traveled extensively while growing up since his father was in the US Air Force and lived in England and Morocco among other places. He attended the church of Christ.
He collected memories.
He will be interred at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
