Colonel Joseph “Lew” Walter Lewandoski, (Retired) U.S.A.F., age 94, went to his creator, master and God on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on May 29, 1917 in Syracuse, New York to William & Sophia Lewandoski. The family soon after moved to Beaver Falls, PA. Joseph enlisted in the Army in April 1941 before Pearl Harbor and later accepted regular commission with the Air Force in 1947. He graduated from the Air Force Staff and Command School and Industrial College of Armed Forces. He served three years on ROTC duty at Ohio State. During the Korean War he also served with the UN Armistice Commission at Pan Mun Jon and with the Pacific Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. Joseph served two tours at the Pentagon. His last assignment was as Commander of San Vito Air Base in Italy. Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Carol Munn, and his brother, Steve and his wife, Doris. He leaves behind his “Night & Day” love, Helen. They were married on June 12, 1943 and enjoyed 68 years of wonderful life and love. Survivors also include his grandsons, Roy Daniel Munn Jr., Michael Munn & wife, Jennifer; six great-grandchildren; and nephews, Dick Lewandoski & wife, Elsie and Jimmy Lewandoski. Visitation will take place from 6-9:00 p.m. with a vigil at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at St. John Newmann Catholic Church with Rev. Jeremiah McCarthy celebrant.
