Dr. Jose L. Fernandez, a.k.a. "Joe", age 90, went peacefully to be with the Lord on December 5, 2017, in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Fernandez was born to Manuel Fernandez and Julia Rodriguez de Fernandez on July 24, 1927 in Mexico City, Mexico. Joe graduated from medical school at The National Autonomous University of Mexico. He came to Peoria, Illinois in 1953 and completed his internship at St. Francis Hospital. His first residency was in general surgery at the Methodist Hospital in Peoria where he met his wife, Barbara, who was a student nurse. On June 25, 1957, they were married in her hometown of Elmwood, Illinois. Additional residencies were general surgery in Clifton Springs, New York and thoracic surgery in Jersey City, New Jersey at the Pollak Chest Hospital. In 1960, he moved to San Antonio where he became Chief Surgical Resident at Santa Rosa Hospital. In 1961, he opened his own surgical practice. Joe was a very compassionate and successful general surgeon for 35 years. He was kind, caring, and very dedicated to his patients. Joe also had a servant's heart as he performed surgical evaluations at the Stella Maris Clinic weekly, and provided surgical procedures to these patients at Santa Rosa Hospital often without compensation for 30 years. He had a gentle spirit and was loved by everyone. Joe and Barbara were blessed to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary in June. Joe had a strong devotion and love of family. His immense generosity was evident as he helped so many people in need. Besides his great love of surgery, he enjoyed going to his ranch and relaxing at the beach at North Padre Island and Acapulco. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling the world with his family. Joe was a beloved father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Manuel and Fernando Fernandez Rodriguez and his sister, Bertha Fernandez de Pasquel. Dr. Fernandez is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Fernandez; son, David Fernandez, DVM (Shari Fernandez, MD); daughter, Nancy Zapata (Vincent); grandchildren, Sara Schultis (Michael), Eric Fernandez, Ashley Zapata, Alexa Zapata and Avery Zapata; his sister, Alicia Fernandez de Amione and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues.
