John was a good friend and colleague from my time at the University of Tennessee (2003-2006).  For the past 14 years we stayed in touch with regular phone calls to discuss our children, politics, research, etc. He was  very intelligent, inquisitive, and kind. What I admired most about John was his unfailing positive and optimistic outlook on life despite his struggles with back problems. I will miss our phone calls.
