John Howard, 74, of San Antonio, died May 15, 2021, of complications of Covid-19. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218. Rosary followed by Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2021 at St. Henry Catholic Church, 1619 S. Flores Street, San Antonio, TX 78204.
Mr. Howard is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Karen Howard, of Crofton, Maryland.
Mr. Howard graduated from Central Catholic High School and University of Texas (Austin). He received master’s degrees in Mathematics Education from the University of Wisconsin and from the University of Montana. He taught mathematics until his early retirement. Following his retirement, he worked for a company producing medical test kits. It was during this time he started volunteering as a translator for medical organizations assisting underserved and indigenous communities. After leaving the medical supplies company, he was involved in real estate management and continued his volunteer work.
He had a profound love of the outdoors. This was expressed in hiking, participating in Volksmarches with his father as well as rafting and taking extensive day hikes in the mountains of Montana.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Henry Catholic Church and/or any Catholic Charities.
